<description>Next was selling its operating system on a number of platforms at the time of the Apple acquisition. They sold ports for the hp-pa, sparc, intel and another chip that I forget at this time.

Their tools supported "fat binaries" back in that day, and the IDE allowed developers to build on a host code that would run on all editions of NextStep.

Rumor is that they did not kill the ports, but instead kept the x86 port inside going for a while. The core OS (Darwin) was open sourced and it was possible to run x86 versions of the core OS on Intel before the Apple announcement. It was just not very useful without the windowing system and the applications.

What is really interesting about Apple though is that they have been very pragmatic about integrating various pieces of open source software into their OS:

The printing subsystem and drivers come from the open source CUPS framework; Their compiler and tools are the GNU GCC and GNU binutils toolchains; Their camera support is the open source gPhoto framework; The Unix userland was ported from FreeBSD.

For some components they have integrated existing working code from the open source world into their stack, and the missing gaps they actively develop.

<description>Or, it could be that Apple had Intel builds of NeXT/MacOSX all along, hedging their bet if a switch would be necessary. And it's not like this is any revolutionary; NT was originally built on MIPS machines, simultaneously porting it to x86. The long lead time before an x64 build was finished was probably due to (1) a lost interest in keeping the cross-platform portability after the RISC platforms withered away, and (2) a lot of other changes was to be merged into the codebase at the same time (XPsp2, backports from Vista)</description>
